It helps some people to identify with what happened to them when they SEE and HEAR examples and such things are not swept under the rug. Sometimes you have to talk about what happened in order to move past it. It wasn't your fault, and believe it or not it's not their fault either. They are broken too, and literally doing the best that they can. If you copy their behavior though, you are part of the problem. The movie did such a great job portraying what a kid in an abusive home looks like I won't try to elaborate further, just watch the clip:
